NORTON — Suspected criminals have targeted a Central Africa Building Society (CABS) remote automated teller machine (ATM) in Norton Monday morning, blasting the terminal in bombing attack. The physical condition of the installation indicates significant structural damage to the housing unit, though police and bank authorities have not yet ascertained the exact monetary loss incurred during the blast.
Impeccable surces told Express Mail Zim that the money had been deposited around 4pm.
The physical heist follows hot on the heels of a massive cyber fraud hit involving more than $1 million at the financial institution. In that case, 24-year-old Midlands State University (MSU) computer science student Sabelo Malunga was fingered as the prime suspect.
Malunga appeared in court earlier this week facing charges of hacking and breaching CABS’s computer systems. He was remanded in custody, with his formal bail hearing set for Thursday. Investigators continue to secure the crime scene at the Norton branch as inquiries into the physical bombing remain ongoing.
