CHITUNGWIZA, ZIMBABWE — In a robust and coordinated effort to dismantle the scourge of illicit substances tearing through local communities, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) hosted a high-profile drug and substance abuse awareness campaign in Chitungwiza Town’s Unit L sector.
The critical intervention campaign was blessed and spearheaded by ZRP Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba, underscoring the government’s high-level commitment to eradicating the drug epidemic threatening the nation’s youth.
Direct Intervention in a High-Risk Zone
Chitungwiza’s Unit L has long been flagged by authorities and community leaders as a major hotspot heavily burdened by substance abuse. Illicit drugs such as crystal meth (commonly known as mutoriro), marijuana, and various unregulated chemical cocktails have wreaked havoc on families, driving up local crime rates and trapping vulnerable youth in vicious cycles of addiction.
Addressing the gathered residents, stakeholders, and youth, police leadership emphasised that law enforcement alone cannot win this war. The campaign focused heavily on community-led policing, early intervention, and rehabilitative support, urging residents to expose syndicates supplying these deadly substances to their children.
Free Medical Outreach for the Community
Adding significant value to the initiative, Highway Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) graced the event, providing essential health services directly to the public. Recognising the physical toll that substance abuse and general economic hardships take on community health, HEMS medical personnel conducted free blood pressure and blood sugar level check-ups for hundreds of attendees.
